In recent years, the manufacture of almost all types of transportation vehicles has
declined, apart from the electric bicycle. Today, 1in 7 of all bikes manufactured is now
battery assisted and it's numbers are certainly growing. Interestingly, car production alongside
bicycle production reflects that, in the 1950's and the 1960's numbers rolling off production
lines were pretty similar. But since then it has all changed.
After 1970, bike production ( then at 20 million) grew almost exponentially and has outpaced
car production my a large margin, so it is now approaching 3 times the level of car production.
Indeed by 2007, bikes made approached 130 million units worldwide, compared to motor
vehicle production around 50 million units. Research suggests that many industry and resource
professionals are predicting large growth in this area.
'Interbike' ( North America's largest trade fair) states there are currently 150 million EBIKES
alone in use in the world today. This is set to rise to some 650 million by 2025, forming some
50% of ALL bike sales !
A central idea being put forward in many parts of the world, suggests ebikes are the very future
of cycling. While retailers and bike organisations continue to report interest among all ages from
26 to 96, the sweet spot (or sport !) is those aged around 40. However, younger people are
increasingly expressing interest in ebikes and buying them too. There is much less stigma attached
to these machines than there used to be.
